Is it possible to get custom-made orthotics without having an assessment?
The short answer is no — because without the assessment, the orthotics simply wouldn’t be worth having.
In this blog, we’ll walk you through the process of how our custom insoles are made, and why the biomechanical assessment is a vital, non-negotiable part of the journey.
What Is a Biomechanical Assessment?
A biomechanical assessment is an opportunity for our expert to evaluate how your body moves - looking closely at your gait, foot structure, alignment, and posture. It also includes a discussion around any symptoms you may be experiencing, your lifestyle, footwear habits, and activity levels.
Terry Hallett, our in-house specialist, has over 30 years of experience as a physiotherapist, with more than 20 of those focused specifically on lower-limb biomechanics. His expert eye ensures that each pair of orthotics is precisely tailored to what your body needs.
Why You Can’t Skip It
If you're looking for a ready-made option, we do stock a high-quality range of Sidas off-the-shelf insoles - and as far as non-custom solutions go, they're excellent.
However, no two feet are the same. While off-the-shelf insoles might provide temporary relief, they don’t address the root cause of your issues. That’s where custom orthotics come in.

The biomechanical assessment allows Terry to prescribe the exact support your body needs - much like how an optician determines the right lenses for your eyes.
Skipping this step could mean the insoles would be, at best, ineffective - and at worst, could cause further issues or discomfort.
In fact, we’ve seen countless patients who have come to us after trying cheaper or ill-fitting alternatives elsewhere, only to find their symptoms persisted or worsened. The difference? A proper assessment by an experienced specialist.
What You’re Really Paying For
So, what exactly are you paying for when you book a biomechanical assessment?
First and foremost, it’s the time and expertise of a seasoned clinician who has spent decades specialising in this field.
Secondly, it’s a full clinical evaluation to determine exactly what you need. In some cases, Terry may advise that insoles aren’t the right solution at all - in which case, he’ll guide you towards the most beneficial treatment instead.
Put simply: the assessment is the foundation of the treatment, not an optional extra. It’s what makes our custom insoles custom - and effective.
Value for Money – Not a Shortcut
We fully understand that many people are feeling the pinch financially. That’s why we do everything we can to keep our prices as affordable as possible, without compromising on quality.

In fact, the combined cost of your biomechanical assessment and custom orthotics at The Comfoot Zone is significantly lower than what many similar clinics charge for comparable services.
It might be tempting to opt for a cheaper alternative - but when it comes to your feet, cutting corners can end up costing more in the long run.
The Bottom Line
The biomechanical assessment isn’t an added extra - it’s the essential starting point. Without it, there’s no way to prescribe or create an effective, personalised insole.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I bring insoles I’ve had made elsewhere?
You’re welcome to bring them along if you'd like Terry to take a look, but it’s not necessary - we’ll be making a completely new custom pair based on your current needs.
What if I’ve had an assessment before?
If you’ve previously had a biomechanical assessment with us, we’ll still need to carry out a new one for each set of insoles, although the appointment may be shorter - especially if your last pair was made recently.
We do not keep moulds or casts, as your feet and gait can change over time, so each pair is made from scratch.
What should I wear or bring to a biomechanical appointment?
Feel free to bring the shoes you wear most often, that way we can make sure your insoles fit inside them.
